Lesson 4
Design thinking challenge
In this lesson, students participate in a guided design thinking sprint focused on a school-related scenario. The activity emphasizes empathy, problem definition, and ideation. Today’s activity is unplugged and does not require students to use computers. In Lesson 5, students will reference their planning sheet from today’s lesson in order to create a prototype based on their process.

Standards
CSTA Standards
- 2-AP-10: Use flowcharts and/or pseudocode to address complex problems as algorithms
- 2-AP-13: Decompose problems and subproblems into parts to facilitate the design, implementation, and review of programs
- 2-AP-15: Seek and incorporate feedback from team members and users to refine a solution that meets user needs
- 2-IC-22: Collaborate with many contributors through strategies such as crowdsourcing or surveys when creating a computational artifact.
Common Core Standards
- ELA.SL.6.1: Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 6 topics, texts, and issues, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly.
NGSS Standards
- MS-ETS1-1: Define the criteria and constraints of a design problem with sufficient precision to ensure a successful solution, taking into account relevant scientific principles and potential impacts on people and the natural environment that may limit possible solutions.
- MS-ETS1-2: Evaluate competing design solutions using a systematic process to determine how well they meet the criteria and constraints of the problem
- MS-ETS1-4: Develop a model to generate data for iterative testing and modification of a proposed object, tool, or process such that an optimal design can be achieved.
