Lesson 5
Prototype a solution
Students are introduced to the concept of algorithms and their connection to flowcharts in this lesson. Students discuss the importance of clear, sequential instructions when outlining a process and apply that to creating algorithms and flowcharts. They return to their process from the last lesson and iterate to include their proposed solution. To conclude the lesson, students share their flowchart with a partner, highlighting how they have reflected their proposed solution and the outlined constraints.
Learning objective
Students will prototype a solution to a problem.
Standards
CSTA Standards
- 2-AP-10: Use flowcharts and/or pseudocode to address complex problems as algorithms
- 2-AP-13: Decompose problems and subproblems into parts to facilitate the design, implementation, and review of programs
- 2-AP-15: Seek and incorporate feedback from team members and users to refine a solution that meets user needs
- 2-AP-19: Document programs in order to make them easier to follow, test, and debug.
Common Core Standards
- ELA.RST.6-8.7: Integrate quantitative or technical information expressed in words in a text with a version of that information expressed visually (e.g., in a flowchart, diagram, model, graph, or table).
- ELA.SL.6.1: Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 6 topics, texts, and issues, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly.
NGSS Standards
- MS-ETS1-1: Define the criteria and constraints of a design problem with sufficient precision to ensure a successful solution, taking into account relevant scientific principles and potential impacts on people and the natural environment that may limit possible solutions.
- MS-ETS1-4: Develop a model to generate data for iterative testing and modification of a proposed object, tool, or process such that an optimal design can be achieved.
