Unit 5.1

Taking a tour

In this unit, students will use prior research on a geographic location to design and code an interactive quiz game in Scratch. They will plan visuals, narration, and clickable elements to share facts, then build a game using sequences, conditionals, and events — with optional scoring using variables — that teaches and tests knowledge about their chosen place.

Overview documents

1

Event-based programming

Students are introduced to event-based programming. They investigate and modify an existing program in Scratch.

2

Planning your quiz

Students use a storyboard to plan out how they will share 3–5 facts about their chosen geographic location and plan out the questions for their quiz.

3

Build it in Scratch - part 1

Students build their own interactive collage in Scratch to share their selected facts.

4

Build it in Scratch - part 2

Students use their storyboard from lesson 2 to create the quiz part of their project. Students are introduced to Boolean blocks from the sensing category and investigate how they can be used within conditional statements in Scratch

5

Tracking the score

Students learn how to create and name variables in a program. They add a variable to their program to track a user’s score.

6

How to play

Students prepare their quiz games for a showcase. They outline directions for their game and test them with classmates.
