Lesson 5
Add variety
In this lesson, students make their items more difficult to collect by changing their size, speed, or how often they appear on the screen. They are then introduced to operator commands, which can be used to perform mathematical operations. Finally, they modify their programs to change the value of a variable using an operator command.

Standards
CSTA Standards
- 1B-AP-09: Create programs that use variables to store and modify data.
- 1B-AP-10: Create programs that include sequences, events, loops, and conditionals
- 1B-AP-11: Decompose (break down) problems into smaller, manageable subproblems to facilitate the program development process.
Common Core Standards
- CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.4.OA.A.1: Interpret a multiplication equation as a comparison, e.g., interpret 35 = 5 × 7 as a statement that 35 is 5 times as many as 7 and 7 times as many as 5. Represent verbal statements of multiplicative comparisons as multiplication equations.
